Four Coins On My Birthday Wish List For 2012 I have a birthday rapidly approaching, and believe that it's unlikely that any of my friends or relatives will be generous enough to dig into their purses and wallets for a coin gift in the £20 - £40 quid range. Perhaps I'm cynical, but I'm grimly anticipating the usual fare of socks, chocs and/or old spice aftershave. To gloss over the fact I am rapidly approaching 40 and to cheer myself up, I have been visiting a variety of bullion dealers, searching for interesting new releases to add to my collection. At the moment I've narrowed it down to just 4. Coins from the Perth Mint, Baird & Co, Wy Argent and the Guernsey Mint all made the list. |

Are Woodland Squirrels Now Saving Silver? It appears that not only human investors are purchasing precious metals as a safeguard against hyperinflation and financial instability. Indeed, small mammals are also swiftly climbing aboard the numismatic bullion bandwagon...... One of the two squirrels in the cartoon to the right is storing up acorns to prepare for winter, the other is stacking shiny Britannias in his cosy burrow. What's next, Forex trading hedgehogs? If we see any we'll be sure to post the picture here..... |

Things To Consider When Buying Bars Many of us born in the 60s, 70s and 80s, who were raised on a diet of Bond movies, have images of villainous spies, glancing greedily bank vaults, overflowing with gleaming bars of gold. However, silver is also gaining popularity with the bullion buying public. Purchasing in the UK can be as easy as contacting a reliable dealer and ordering using a credit, debit card or bank transfer. However it is wise to tread carefully by reading independent dealer reviews, to minimize the possibility of getting ripped off. |

Shopping In Guernsey At Sarnia Investing in silver isn't just for those with a surplus 16 grand in their bank accounts to buy a monster box of coins. Buying fractional silver coins can be very cost effective for those with thin wallets as well. The following Guernsey based dealer sells 1/4 oz .999 rounds that cost little more than a couple of toffee nut lattes. I had never dealt with this company before, but ordering from them was a simple process. Within a few days I had in my possession an attractive pair of rounds forged in the mysteriously named Castle Güldengossa. |

The Australian Kookaburra From The Perth Mint Perhaps you haven't stumbled upon news of this sterling establishment here in the UK, but the Perth Mint is Australia's oldest currently operating mint, backed and owned by the Australian government, which guarantees the authenticity of the precious metals minted there. This cast iron government guarantee ensures that Perth Mint products are popular with both Australian citizens and international investors alike. One of the most attractive coins minted here is the 1 Troy oz Kookaburra, created from .999 fine silver, and it is legal tender over there in Australia. |

The History Of Beautiful British Britannias Doing their best to put the "Great" back in Great Britain, these eye catching coins are struck in an alloy called Britannia, which contains 958 parts per 100 of silver. Britannia was a standard set into law in 1697 by an Act of Parliament to replace the very popular sterling standard. The front of the coin shows a female warrior riding imperiously in her chariot, striking fear into the hearts of her enemies. |

Canadian Maple Leaf Coins As Canadian as maple syrup, the first Canadian Maple Leaf was minted in 1988, and would be an excellent addition to any collection. The Maple is guaranteed to be .9999 pure, the highest purity level currently offered on any coin struck by a government owned mint. This gorgeous coin's face value is five Canadian dollars. The reverse of the lovely Maple features a single maple leaf while the obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II to reflect Canada's long standing membership of the Commonwealth. |

A Selection Of International 1 oz Coins
While perhaps not as valuable as their classy gold counterparts, numismatic silver coins have a romance and an attraction all of their own. With a colder appearance compared to the warmth of gold, argentum coins are a unique item for any collector, and there are a number of them trading on the market today, that are worthy of closer inspection. American Eagles, Canadian Maples, Chinese Pandas, Austrian Philharmonics, Australian Kookaburras and Mexican Libertads are just a few of those available to enthusiasts, and collectors. |

Did Artaxias Fortunas Discover Silver?
Did this precious metal journey of discovery begin in 5777 B.C in the Arabian desert between modern day Jordan and Oman? A nomad called Artaxias Fortunas, while watering his parched camels at a tiny oasis, fell asleep under the cooling shade of a palm tree. When he awoke, hours later to the sound of unrestrained camel burping, his eyes widened in astonishment as he discovered his thirsty camels had drained the oasis completely dry, exposing a shimmering lode of precious metal. |

Examples Of Currencies That Have Collapsed To assess failure or success, the effectiveness of fiat currencies should first be filtered through the prism of history. The earliest civilizations established tried and trusted methods of trading. A specific symbol of value was created: beads, stones, bones, teeth, shells etc. Other more convenient and sophisticated forms of currency appeared on the scene, as dealers, traders and merchants started to identify the need for a mutual form of payment for buying items exchanged in trading. To avoid the inconvenience of grocery shopping with wheelbarrows full of paper notes, it is probably wise to learn from the mistakes of the past. |

Are Chinese Citizens Buying Silver? We have learned that the Chinese government has begun to buy gold and other valuable commodities like palladium. However, the Chinese are now casting their astute financial eyes over a paler precious metal (AG) sibling, with many of their citizens now asking "where can we buy silver?". Boasting a population of over 1.25 billion people, consider what would happen to the price if only 1000th of Joe China public, made a simultaneous order for millions of ounces? How does one say "Back Up The Nissan Leaf!" in Mandarin? |

Good Call Mike Maloney - Buy a House With 500 Oz? Back in 2008, before the financial collapse and trillions in bailouts, precious metals investor Mike Maloney predicted it would soon be possible to purchase a median priced family property for the astoundingly low price of 500 ozs of silver. Push the clock forward to 2009 in areas like Detroit and Cleveland, and it has been reported that banks have been unloading derelict homes to grateful artists and opportunistic entrepreneurs for as low as 100 dollars a piece, that's less than 10 ounces at the current spot price! |

A Short History of Chinese Panda Coins 1983 was a good year.....It was the year I purchased my first home computer, the Spectrum 48k and also the year the "People's Bank of China" started minting lovely Pandas. Alas, coins were not issued in the Panda series during the years of 1986 and 1988, however this collection has been issued in every other year after. Ably distributed by the China Gold Coin Incorporation, they are considered legal Chinese tender. |
